William immediately fell in love with his new country and on October 31, 1860, he became a naturalized citizen. The following year on August 17, 1861, he enlisted in Company F, 36th Regiment Illinois Volunteers as a private. This was the beginning of the Civil War. His regiment first went to the Missouri-Arkansas area where he fought in the Battle of Pea Ridge in early 1862. Later that year, the regiment went to Kentucky where William was wounded in the wrist and thigh in the Battle of Perryville on October 8, 1862. Subsequently, he was discharged because of his wounds on March 31, 1863 at Murfressboro, Tennessee.
